Season's greetings on this frosty Christmas Eve! I have been meaning to share this post for the last week, but the week before Christmas has been a little bit busy. Wishing you and yours the best on this beautiful day!
We have been wanting to find more ways we can help people in our community and show Leif the importance of getting involved and helping those in need. In talking to one of my clients about this a few months back, he mentioned that he had taken his boys to feed the homeless through an organization called "Mamma's Hands". That name rang a bell for me because just last year I helped one of my clients buy a home that was being retired from "Mama's Hands". At the time of the transaction I had done a little internet research to find out what Mama's Hands was all about.... What I found was very inspiring and unique. Mamma's Hands has what they call The House of Hope, which helps mothers in crisis find their way—to be the best they can be, for themselves and for their children. This program has been touching hearts and transforming lives for almost 30 years. This weekly Phone Home Program connects youth and young adult volunteer groups with homeless adults living on the streets of downtown Seattle. Denny meets volunteers every week at the Dairy Queen in Eastgate (Bellevue) at 6pm and shuttles you to Occidental Park in Seattle. They ask that you bring blankets, socks, coats, jackets and/or sweet treats to share with the homeless. Denny buys 50 hamburgers and makes hot chocolate. Once you arrive, you are encouraged to connect, offer them to call home, and hand out food, blankets and clothing.
Our family went last Wednesday bearing candy canes, a Santa hat and blankets. The shuttle was completely full with volunteers coming from as far as Anacortes. Once we arrived in Seattle, we filled our baskets with goodies and burgers and set out to connect with those in need. My favorite part was seeing how happy the homeless were to see the smile on our 6 year old son's face as he wished them a Merry Christmas and handed them a candy cane. The lights were shining bright that night in the park and so were their faces. We will continue to volunteer with this program and would love it if you would like to join us.
